Next spring, the Plaza at Davie will welcome a new cafe specializing in empanadas into its food and drink community. The Wild Mug is awaiting construction at 11476 W State Road 84 in Davie with an expected opening date in April or May 2023.

Behind the project is Fausto Arroyo, a restaurateur who has previously seen success with Top Notch Bistro, which offered a wide selection of empanadas in North Miami. Top Notch moved to supplying its empanadas to cafes and restaurants in the area and, unfortunately, eventually shuttered during the pandemic. But those empanadas are about to make a big comeback at The Wild Mug, with varieties like beef, spicy chicken, spinach and cheese, and breakfast (i.e. egg and sausage).

“We make everything from scratch, from the dough to the filling,” Arroyo told What Now on Friday. Arroyo and his wife were working in finance when they decided to move into the restaurant business back in 2016. “Everything I make I learned from my father and mother.”

On top of the empanadas, The Wild Mug will offer sandwiches like its pulled pork sandwich.

“It’s something special, something unique,” Arroyo said. “There’s nothing similar around here. It’s not like a barbecue pulled pork sandwich.”

The Wild Mug is opening in Davie this spring, but in the meantime, you can try Arroyo and company’s made-from-scratch empanadas at Ann’s Florist & Coffee Bar in Fort Lauderdale.
