The hard years of the COVID-19 pandemic were a strange time for the restaurant business. With lockdowns and labor shortages, many restaurants were unable to survive. Others adjusted to the new delivery-focused demands of the industry and were able to come into their own.

Still others found a chance, amidst the economic slowdown, to get something started. Faustino Lopez, a first-time Tropical Smoothie Cafe franchisee, is part of this last group.

“I’m a software developer by trade, but for a long time my wife and I had been looking to invest in fast-casual dining,” Lopez told What Now on Tuesday. “When the pandemic hit, I got furloughed. And one day, I went to Home Depot—you know, working on that to-do list—and the only place that was open was a Tropical Smoothie Cafe. I’d never heard of it, but I said, let’s give it a shot. I walked across the street and found there was a long line. And the rest is history.”

After being impressed by the franchise’s product, Lopez began the process of becoming a franchisee, which was a difficult proposition in that uncertain time. Now, after weathering the long process of preparation, working through labor shortages and other difficulties, Lopez is preparing to launch his first Tropical Smoothie Cafe at 18050 NW 57th Ave. in Hialeah.

The space in question comprises 1600 square feet and features both indoor and outdoor seating for a total of about 30 guests to enjoy the smoothie megachain’s popular smoothies. These include Tropical Treats like the Peanut Butter Cup (peanut butter, banana & chocolate) and Super Veggies varieties like Detox Island Green (spinach, kale, mango, pineapple, banana & fresh ginger). Fruit Blends include Mango Magic, with mango, pineapple, and nonfat yogurt, and there are also nutrient-packed Balanced Fusions like Triple Berry Oat (strawberries, blueberries, cranberry, multivitamin, ground flaxseed, whole-grain oats, whey protein & Splenda).

The menu also features light eats, including selections of flatbreads, wraps, sandwiches, and salads.
