Founded in 2003 in Granville, Ohio by Chuck and Lisa Whitman, frozen confection chain Whit’s Frozen Custard has since grown steadily to encompass more than 80 locations across nine states. The brand has 20 locations currently operating in Florida, with several more on the way. One of these is slated for Coral Springs, where it will open at 2886 N University Drive.

Whit’s offers its frozen custard in a cup, cake cone, or waffle cone (alongside sundaes and ice cream sandwiches), offering varieties like vanilla, chocolate, and a flavor of the week. Custom flavors made with one of Whit’s expansive list of toppings can be blended on the spot, and pre-imagined combinations have included Buckeye Madness (Reese’s Cup®, Chocolate Syrup, and Peanut Butter), Hawaiian Lu’au (Pineapple, coconut, banana, and macadamias), and Mud Pie (Mocha, Cookies ‘n’ Crème, and Hot Caramel).

If you’re wondering what exactly separates frozen custard from ice cream (or, for that matter, frozen yogurt), you can find this explanation on the Whit’s website:

“Frozen custard is still created with the same pure ingredients as a century ago; cream, eggs, and sugar. But there are three reasons why frozen custard is thicker, smoother, and creamier than ice cream: 1) Frozen custard uses a higher butterfat content, 2) Making frozen custard is a slower labor-intensive process that is careful to minimize the amount of air blended into the mix, referred to as “overrun,” and finally, 3) The typical serving temperature of frozen custard is 26 degrees, that’s 10 degrees warmer than ice cream.”

Opening on North University Drive, the new Whit’s location will join a thriving food and beverage community that includes concepts like Talkin’ Tacos, La Fontana Pizzeria & Italian, and TooJay’s Deli.

What Now reached out on Friday to franchisee Javier Retamar to inquire about plans for the opening. Retamar was not immediately available for comment.
