Popular Wilton Manors restaurant La Mexicana Taco Bar is preparing to expand to a second location. The restaurant, whose current home is at 2430 NE 13th Ave., will launch its new outpost early in the new year at 925 N Andrews Ave. in Fort Lauderdale, opening in the space formerly occupied by 925 Nuevos Cubanos.
“For me, my property in Wilton Manors has been my home. Since I moved here, I have been at my restaurant every single day. I am never home,” owner Diva Name, who operates the restaurant with her business partner John Whelden, said in coverage by the Miami New Times. “And I think it’s cool that just like how La Mexicana is my home, the owners of 925 felt the same way. This was their home. They used to live there. And I’m going to honor that.”
Guests at the Fort Lauderdale location can expect the same vibrant menu of ceviches, tacos, burritos, and more, loaded up with proteins like chicken, steak, chicharron, and carnitas—along with La Mexicana Taco Bar’s popular Cuban coffee. The new location will also offer a selection of affordable small plates, John Whelden told What Now on Wednesday.
“We’re excited to the start this new chapter,” Whelden said.
Work is still underway at the new location and an opening can be expected for January or February, Whelden said.
The Miami New Times reports that the Fort Lauderdale location will eventually serve as a temporary flagship, with La Mexicana’s current location at the Yard in Wilton Manors expected to close at some point next year to accommodate the construction of a new six-story mixed-use development. La Mexicana plans to reopen in Wilton Manors after construction is completed.
